  I'm working on a banner with text on it and came across this
(limitation?), too.  My fix was to commit to the 'ground' color as
defined in my text map, and then used a second map that was just a small
block of that same ground color.  Of course, this fix wouldn't work as
well for a detailed 'ground' surface, but for quick n' dirty it did the
trick!
